Our Product Scorecard

Our product designers consider environmental, health, performance, and economic factors when developing new products and improving existing ones. Now they have a new tool to help them objectively balance these considerations and zero in on impact points that make a product perform better or improve sustainability. Our product scorecard, developed in 2009 with our sustainability partners Pure Strategies for all of our non-fiber products, allows us to score our products, evaluate trade-offs, and set quantitative improvement objectives. We’ve weighted the many scoring factors to align with our values so anything that negatively affects human health gives product scores a very hard hit while less critical factors weigh less heavily.

Examining the packaging for our new hand dishwashing liquid illustrates how the scorecard rates products against a sustainable ideal. While the recycled content in the bottle has increased from 25% to 90%, a big boost in sustainability, the overall packaging score only increased slightly. While this product scores high in addressing toxicity to humans and the environment and on global warming potential, we envision packaging in the future that could be reused, is biodegradable and has a lower product-to- packaging ratio, three factors where the product posts lower scores. We believe the scorecard will spur our designers to higher levels of innovation and achievement.
